Plastic bottle cap

Project details

  • challenge: measuring the contact area between bottleneck and bottle cap within the thread
  • industry: food and drinks, plastic moulding
  • year: 2010/2011

Technology

  • software: VGStudio MAX from Volume Graphics for coordinate measurement, data processing and visualization
  • image capturing: METROTOM 1500
  • determining the surface of both bottle and bottle cap with sub-voxel accuracy using the Coordinate Measurement add-on module

Data quantity

  • total captured data set size: 4 GB
  • voxel size: 40 µm

For conventional non-destructive testing methods, measuring the contact area of a closed screw cap is an insoluble task. However, the value of the actual contact area is essential for ensuring the leak tightness of the bottle. The problem can now be solved and the contact area quantified using a CT scan of the closed bottle and VGStudio MAX. The method for determining this value described here is also used in other applications where leak tightness is essential.

Method:
A Region of Interest (ROI) is created for the bottle using the 'Region Grower'. When creating the ROI for the bottle cap, the ROI of the bottle is used as the border. The result is two ROIs touching at the points of contact. After advanced surface determination of the bottle using the created ROI, the ROI of the cap is extended by one voxel. As a result, the cap voxels extend into the bottle surface in all points of contact. Using the standard functionality of VGStudio MAX, the bottle surface covered by the extended cap ROI can now be displayed. This value represents the exact contact area between bottle and cap of the closed bottle.
